ARNOLD, Matthew. Poetical Works of Matthew Arnold. MacMillan and Co., Limited, 1901: New York. Later 1901 printing of the first edition of 1890 in exquisite, buttery tan calf fine binding by the master binder Ramage of London (signed); gilt title to spine with five raised bands and tasteful gilt tooling; Marbled blue-green end papers with tooled turn-ins upper and lower boards; all edges hand-marbled to match. Hinges solid and binding tight throughout; exceptionally clean text block without any blemishes; virtually unread. Frontis portrait of author. 5 x 7 1/2 (12 x 19 cm). A beautiful binding and book in fine condition. Destined for an Arnold, Hardy, Ramage or fine binding collector. PROVENANCE: while not definitive, there is a viable indication that this book was in Thomas Hardy's library at his home at Max Gate. On the front free sheet, there is a penned notation, "E.G. from F.H." and "Max Gate Lib." F.H. are the initials of Hardy's wife, Florence Hardy. "E.G" are the initials of Elspeth Grahame, the wife of Kenneth Grahame, author of The Wind In the Willows. Mrs. Grahame and Mrs. Hardy were friends and confidants. There is strong evidence this book may have been given to Mrs. Grahame by Mrs. Hardy as a gift.
